Era il 20 maggio 2021 quando l’editore Hakusensha rilasciò un comunicato stampa che informava della morte dell’autore di Berserk, il fumettista giapponese Kentarō Miura. Tuttavia, lo stesso comunicato stampa affermava che il decesso era avvenuto il 6 maggio di quell’anno, ma che l’annuncio era stato ritardato per rispettare il lutto della sua famiglia.

Chi è Kentarō Miura
Nato a Chiba l’11 luglio 1966, Miura realizzò il suo primo manga, intitolato Miuranger, all’età di soli 10 anni, che fu stampato per i suoi compagni di classe con la scuola; il manga fu raccolto in 40 tankōbon. Nel 1977, Miura creò il suo secondo manga di nome Ken e no michi (La via della spada), usando per la prima volta inchiostro di china. Quando nel 1979 entrò alle scuole medie, il disegno di Miura maturò molto non appena iniziò ad usare tecniche professionali. Il suo primo dōjinshi fu pubblicato con l’aiuto di amici nel 1982.
Nel 1985 Kentarō Miura frequentò un corso d’arte della Niho Daigaku University e cominciò altri due manga: Futanabi e Noa, con il quale si è garantito l’accesso all’università. Nel 1988 concepì quello che diverrà il suo capolavoro, Berserk, con un unico volume di 48 pagine che oggi i fan conoscono con il nome di Berserk Prototype.
Le vicende di Berserk, serializzate in Giappone da Hakusensha nella collana Young Animal dall’agosto del 1989, si incentrano su Gatsu, un guerriero maledetto costretto a vagare senza sosta per sopravvivere e trovare vendetta. La storia, inizialmente horror, va via via arricchendosi di elementi del genere fantasy, esplorando gli anfratti più profondi della natura umana. Le tematiche principali sono l’illusorietà del libero arbitrio, l’oscuro e necessario potere della violenza, il destino dell’uomo, l’istinto di conservazione, l’onnipresenza del male.
L’ultimo capitolo dell’acclamata opera di Miura, pubblicato dall’editore giapponese prima dell’ennesimo stop, risale al 23 ottobre 2020.
Il successo del manga ha portato alla realizzazione, nel 1997, di una prima serie televisiva anime, di una trilogia di film tra il 2012 e il 2013, il cui progetto si intitola Berserk – L’epoca d’oro e di una seconda serie televisiva nel 2016, seguita da una seconda stagione nel 2017.
Nessuna decisione definitiva in merito al futuro dell’opera del compianto autore è stata al momento determinata.
Il capitolo 364 di Berserk è stato completato grazie agli assistenti di Kentarō Miura dello Studio Gaga.
Il 22 novembre 2013, sul numero 23 della rivista Young Animal, è stato pubblicato un nuovo manga di Kentarō Miura dal titolo Gigantomakhia, composto da 6 capitoli di 44 pagine l’uno. Si tratta del primo lavoro originale dopo quasi 20 anni.
Nell’agosto del 2019, il maestro Miura ha dato inizio alla serializzazione di un nuovo manga sulla rivista Young Animal Zero, dal titolo Duranki (Dhuranki). L’opera, chiaramente ispirata al mondo mitologico dell’antica Mesopotamia, è un esperimento che dovrebbe permettere al maestro di imparare a collaborare maggiormente con i suoi assistenti, al fine di velocizzare i ritmi di realizzazione e interrompere definitivamente la discontinuità che ha caratterizzato la fase della carriera da mangaka che stava attraversando. Tuttavia il progetto, come anche la longeva serie di Berserk, in quel momento ancora in corso, verranno lasciati incompleti.
